When light is polarized, the transverse waves are wholly or partially restricted to only one direction. Polarized light literally means you see some things, but not others. Moonlight is an example of partially polarized light.
Polarized thinking is a state where opinions, beliefs or interests or individuals or groups do not move along a continuum, but are restricted and concentrated at one of the opposing extremes.
When we feel something which we don’t like, we instinctively move toward a polarized position. This instinct, from the ancient reptilian part of the brain, wants safety and certainty.
We don’t want to experience feelings such as loneliness, helplessness or hopelessness. Moving too far into yang is becoming the aggressor or too far into yin is becoming the victim.
Polarity is an illusion of safety and certainty. Polarity keeps us locked into an offensive or defensive stance. This means you are able to be aware of only some parts of life, but not others, so you are only partially aware or conscious.
As humans we were born into a beautiful reality. It is also a world with uncertainty and paradox. Our lives offer the ability to live in an open state of acceptance where feelings can come and go without owning us, once we learn how to experience them.
For instance, being abandoned by someone is difficult on many levels. We could shut down (yin) or lash out (yang). Or we could sit with the rawness of bruised ego, a broken heart and loneliness and learn from the experience. We could sit with loneliness and heartache until they no longer hold power over us and our new relationship with them opens into a new freedom.
Well…let us try something…
Let us be individuals,
Let us have our free will ideas,
But… Let us listen to others, Let us respect other’s ideas,
Let us not have tunnel vision,
Let us not allow ourselves to be polarized.
