Continuing our Flower Power Series…..

Chives

Bringing chives into your living space?

Chives, with their delicate green stems and lavender-colored blossoms, are a gentle but vibrant presence.  Many rounded green spears shoot up, long, cylindrical and hollow, tapering to a point at the top.  Beautiful in their clean and simple design, they are joined by tiny bulbs on the bottom.   The blossoms have a mild, sweet aroma and grow on stems which are sturdier than the rest of the plant.

Cheerful and eternally-springlike, chives are practical as well as pretty.  The smallest and finest-flavored of the onion tribe, they can be sourced over and over as a delicious and nutritious flavoring for your food.

A little background….

Introducing herbs into your living space need not be time-consuming or intimidating.  Chives have been called a “gateway herb” for non-gardeners because they are easy to grow, but this does depend on proper lighting, water and soil.

Chives, Allium schoenprasum, is a perennial flowering herb in the Amaryllidaceae family.  Other family members include garlic, onions, leeks, Chinese chives and shallots.  The origin of the name “chives” can be traced back to the Latin word “cepa”, which means “onion.”

Allium schoenprasum grows naturally across much of Eurasia and North America.  It is the only species of Allium native to both the New (the Americas) and the Old Worlds (Africa, Asia, and Europe).

Chives have been in use for over 5,000 years that we know of, making them one of the oldest known herbs.  Recorded history shows their use from the time of the Romans, ancient Chinese and many more.  Much detailed research continues today on the efficacy of chives’ medicinal properties.  Some of these areas study chives’ pungent volatile oil (rich in sulphur) which, in large quantities, has antiseptic qualities and assists in lowering blood pressure.

Chives are also believed to be rich in certain chemicals which help with things like improving memory and alleviating depression.  Generally, chives work more toward health improvement rather than being specifically medicinal at this time; they boost appetite, tone the kidneys and, rich in vitamins A and C, assist immune system and skin health.

Growing Chives indoors:

  • Chives can be grown from seed, divided from an existing plant or purchased from a nursery.
  • If you are growing them from seed, make sure the seeds are not too old.
  • Clay pots with multiple drainage holes, such as terracotta are favored for chive plants along with a well-draining potting medium.  Planted about 1/4” deep, kept moist and well lit, the seeds should germinate within 2 weeks.  If you have more than one plant per pot, make sure they are at least 6” apart so they can spread out and grow.
  • For transplanting chives, make sure they are placed at the same depth as they were in their previous container.
  • Chives prefer to be moist, but not soggy.
  • Light is one of the most important factors, allowing at least 4 – 6 hours of sunlight, which means the best position is a south-facing window.  If natural light is limited, it is possible to supplement it with artificial grow lights.

Harvesting Chives:

Chives appreciate having space, so don’t be shy when it comes to harvesting. Cut the stalks just above the soil line to promote new growth.  Regular trimming also encourages growth, remove leaves that are looking slightly old and dry.  If your main interest is in harvesting the leaves, it is a good idea to snip off the flowers as they appear so the energy can be channeled into producing leaves.

To keep harvested leaves fresh longer, wrap them in a damp paper towel and place in a plastic bag in the fridge.  They will stay crisp and flavorful for a week or more.  If you’ve got too many you could chop and freeze them it in an ice cube tray with water to use later on, although they will not have quite as much flavor.  Dried chives also have very little flavor.

How to use Chives:

Chives are included in the group of herbs that the French call “fines herbes”. This is a group of herbs which are a staple in French dishes.  Best used when fresh, chives are usually added toward the end of the cooking process to preserve their delicate flavor (overcooked, they are flavorless).

Commonly mixed into cold soups, stir fry or sandwiches, chives can be used with meat, fish or in salads too.  They add color flavor to sauces, dips or as a garnish.  Chive flowers are edible and can be eaten raw, pickled or even deep-fired.  Soaking the blossoms in vinegar gives it an extra flavor boost and a gorgeous rosy color.  There are some intriguing recipes such as “Chive Blossom Focaccia” which include a dozen chive flowers as well as chopped chives greens.   Making your own “Chive Flower Salt” helps to extend the taste for months and is great on most savory dishes.  Take the petals of the chive blossoms apart and mix them with salt on a plate.  Let the mixture dry for a few days in the air, ensuring it is completely dry before putting it in a jar to enjoy.  If you don’t let the mixture dry long enough, the flavor changes and doesn’t preserve as well.

As one of the first herbs breaking the snow in the spring, Chives symbolize hope and rebirth.  Their simple, spear-like structure has been associated with the planet Mars and the zodiac sign of Aries.

Chives have long been a part of human culture – their stalks were used for divination by Romanian gypsies and they were slipped under pillows to ensure a good sleep.  They were used in the Middle Ages to “lift the spirits of those who were feeling depressed”.

Whether indoors, on your patio or in your garden, Chives can be good company!

Stop struggling, it’s not about winning or losing, but about ceasing to struggle with life and relax as it is.  That is what we are doing in our self-cultivation practice, it’s about relaxing without struggling, just be, and let this attitude spread to the rest of your life.

We all need a loadstone; some center from which to operate.  For some it is home, for others it is merely to withdraw into our own hearts.  In order to do this, we need guidance and self-cultivation to return to our natural state, our unsullied, pure inner person.

Chase after money and security and your heart will never unclench.  If you seek people’s approval, you become bound to them.  Share with others these teachings and you will be immersed in the blessings that come from that.  Do your work and step back, let it be, this is the path to serenity.

If we wish to know what a person is like we need only to observe on whom he bestows his care and what side of his own nature he cultivates and nourishes.  If you want to take care of all things, cultivate and nourish the good parts of your character and everything will be taken care of.

Quote: Like things attract each other according to their kind.

Negative shame is accompanied by guilt and self-denigration, it is pointless and no help to us, in fact it will cause us harm.  Positive shame is when we have harmed ourselves or anyone else, and feel sorry for having done so; this allows us to grow from our mistakes.

Use the cycles of life to establish a measure for your life and then arrange your plans to the units you have chosen.  This way you will always be able to track your own progress in both your short- and long-term goals.  Remember in all cycles after the zenith there must be a decline.

If you have a benevolent heart, you will nourish your community without trying to.  Be simple and generous, do work you enjoy, don’t try to control, don’t compare, don’t compete, be content with just being who you are.  This way you will be in harmony with all others.

If you are too firm in character, you will have difficulty dealing with others.  If not firm enough, you will have difficulty dealing with the course of life.  Do not be concerned whether your plans will fail or succeed, just proceed with life gradually and steadily.

Quote: Nothingness is the truth underlying all things.

Hope and fear is a feeling with two sides, as long as there is one there is always the other.  Hope and fear come as a sense that we lack something, and we are unable to sit, relax, and be ourselves.  If we hold on to hope and fear, they rob us of the present moment.

Self-cultivation is a daily activity.  No matter how much progress we achieve in one day, we must continue the next.  Progress is often so subtle that we may feel the effort is futile, but we must keep doing it every day with the same enthusiasm.

Let go of all desires, detach yourself from all things, dissolve all duality, the idea of good and bad, beautiful and ugly, etc.; practice undiscriminating virtue towards everything and everybody.  These practices are the beginning of liberation and a harmonious oneness with all things.

From the time people lose the primordial, and temporary conditioning takes charge, the human mind becomes confused and agitated.  You can remove this acquired conditioning without causing injury by practicing stillness and emptying the mind. This state is the place that gives life back to the self.

Quote: The secret of life consists in using action in order to attain non action.

Letting go of your security and just being in the moment may seem uncomfortable and frightening, but it gives you a chance to see the world as it is.  Be inquisitive about the unknown and the unanswerable question of what comes next because this awakens your own wisdom mind.

Part of your self-cultivation is expressing yourself in writing, art, or poetry as additional tools for self-discovery.  By articulating your experiences in this way, it will help you understand the various stages you are going through. Doing this satisfies and neutralizes your rational mind.

The spirit of the valley never dies; it is called the mysterious female.  The gate of the mysterious female is the root of heaven and earth.  The female is one who receives something and, with it, creates.  This creative principal is the most marvelous thing in the universe.

If you wish to influence others, first start by cultivating your own personality.  This practice must be allowed to take its course, being hasty would not be wise.  Gentleness that is adaptable, but at the same time penetrating, is the outer form that should proceed from inner calm.

Quote: F.E.A.R. Face Everything and Rise.

We cannot connect with the fundamental wealth of who we are as long as we are buying into the advertisement hype that we have to be someone else, that we have to smell different, or look different.  Connect to your wealth by sharing your feelings of who you really are with others.

There is no such thing as objectivity or direct knowledge of the world.  Everything is relative because each of us has our own vantage point.  As long as we have different perspectives, as long as perception relies on the senses, there cannot be an absolute truth.

Settle your mind like the universe settles the stars in the night sky. Connecting your mind to that subtle origin it will become calm and tranquil, then it will naturally expand, and ultimately your mind becomes as vast and immeasurable as the night sky.

A person must be firm and flexible in order to manage one’s affairs successfully.  If your actions are too firm, you will be met by resistance and nothing can be accomplished.  If you are too flexible you can damage your own self.  Learning the balance between both will insure harmony.

Patience is the antidote to anger, by patience we don’t mean “grin and bear it”.  Instead of reacting suddenly, smell it, look at it, and open yourself  to seeing what’s there.  The journey of patience involves relaxing, opening to what is happening with a sense of wonder.

When faced with a sad situations or events, it is best not to languish in them.  We can change things by some action, by being with different people, moving to other places, or if all else fails adjusting our own attitudes to take the initiative.  Sadness is transitory like everything else.

To cleanse oneself of contaminations, such as anger, resistance, or self-absorption practice undiscriminating virtue.  To practice virtue, give without limitations, without prejudice, and without expectations.  If your willingness to give is limited, so is your ability to receive.

To resolve any conflict, sit down with your adversary face to face.  Generally, dispute arises from not having the flexibility in considering the others opinion.  Whether you win or lose is not enjoyable, it’s better to solve the dispute before it goes too far, usually by meeting your opponent halfway.

Quote: Love life for the sake of life.

When we feel inadequate or unworthy, we want to hold on to what we have and are afraid of feeling worse than we do already.  The cause of our aggression and fear begins to dissolve when we move past this poverty of holding on to things, both physical and mentally.

The source of our energy is partly chemical, our hormones, nutrition from food, and genetics.  The secret is not to overindulge; overindulgence is a waste of your energy.  Also, suppression can hurt the body, even at a very basic level.  Find the proper balance and you will live a healthy and full life.

Being natural is desiring without craving and acting without excess.  Not defending or nourishing your false self you will find that greed, hatred and arrogance vanish by themselves. Toughening your resolve will create self reliance and you will lose the sense of self and other.

If we remain at the mercy of moods, of hope, and of fear, aroused by the outer world, we lose out inner consistency of character.  Then our experiences are merely effects produced by the outside world, not experiences evoked by our own true nature.

Quote: Live true to yourself, not what others expect of you.

When we feel inadequate or unworthy, we want to hold on to what we have and are afraid of feeling worse than we do already.  The cause of our aggression and fear begins to dissolve when we move past this poverty of holding on to things, both physical and mentally.

There is a source of power within you.  Although external circumstances may occasionally hamper you, true movement comes from within yourself.  This power source is latent within each of us, but you can learn to tap into it.  Finding this power is great joy, deciding how to direct it is a great responsibility.

When things arise, let them come; when things depart, let them go, don’t posses, don’t expect.  Practice undiscriminating virtue, take care of those who are deserving, also and equally take care of those who are not.  These practices calm the mind and bring one into harmony with all things.

When inner worth mounts with great force, there is danger that when this force comes to power you may forget to ask what is right, and being intent on movement, you may not wait for the right time.  Great power and force must be indissolubly united with what is right.

Quote: In order to understand, we have to remain in the darkness of not knowing.

When we train in the art of peace, even though we have noble intentions, we are not given any promises that all will be okay.  Instead, simply look deeply at joy and sorrow, hoping and fearing, laughter and crying, at all that lives and dies.  We learn that which truly brings peace is gratitude and tenderness.

Times of adversity cannot last forever.  Even in the midst of great difficulty a tiny opportunity will open, if only by chance.  You must be sharp enough to discern it, quick enough to catch it and determined enough to do something with it.  If you let it pass you may be filled with regrets.

The truth is always right there before you, and what you need is always right in front of you, all you need to do is open your mind and heart and look.  You can do this by being present in this moment, accepting that you don’t know, then the truth will become clear.

When your work has ended look back on your conduct and the consequences of your actions.  If the effects were good, then good fortune will be the result.  It is only by the consequences of your actions and the fruit of your labours that you can judge what to expect.

Quote: Stop looking for something out there and begin seeing within.
