Life keeps coming, just like waves on the ocean, they just keep coming.  Some knock you down, but just keep getting back up and keep walking.  After awhile you will notice the waves appear to be getting smaller.  The key is to keep getting back up, if you don’t you will drown.

In stillness seek the absolute, it has no opposites.  By contrast nothing in the world is absolute, because all things we experience are relative.  Seeking the absolute is a great goal, but you must explore the outer life as well. You will realize they are both part of the seamless whole.

When you take care of things, never waste anything; when you care for people, never abandon anyone.  If you are not attached to your own ideas, and open to what is, you will be able to care for all that come to you, they are your greatest sources of wisdom.

People will give up counselling you if you think you know everything, so be humble, selfless, and keep your mind open and free so it can listen to and be receptive to good advice.  If we cannot be influenced ourselves, we cannot influence or help others.

Quote: Never lose touch with who you really are; in the midst of joy or sorrow remain imperturbable.

How do you want to feel tomorrow, next week, next year?  It is up to you how you use your life.  It doesn’t mean you are the best at cheering up, or your habitual tendencies don’t get the better of you.  Keep reminding yourself that it is your life to live, and every action you do has a result.

Most thinking is tied to some sensory image, we need this way of dualistic thinking to function in the everyday world.  In our meditation we need to eliminate this dualistic thinking in order to reach a state of mind that does not cling to external forms, then all labels fall away.

Inner strength is the master of all frivolities.  Tranquility is the master of agitated emotions.  If you succumb to frivolities and emotions, you lose your inner strength and tranquility.  You should cultivate inner strength and tranquility and not be seduced by addictive temptations.

Letting go means forgiveness, forgetting and releasing old grudges.  When an individual’s consciousness is not holding such blockages, there is no negativity, tension, defenses or stress because one is free and then there is opportunity to choose a different way.

Quote: When goodness is forgotten people act according to rules, not from the heart.

When you wake up in the morning and get a moment of sadness and longing, or just that something is wrong, use this moment as an opportunity to relax and touch the limitless space of your human heart.  Next time the opportunity arises, experiment with this.

When you learn a spiritual system, you must test and prove it to yourself before you can accept it.  Once you make it work for you, express yourself, and take action to create new circumstances for yourself and others. Then the acquisition of this skill becomes worthwhile.

There is an underlying energy or essence that permeates all things, it is always there, it is perfect and creates all things.  This energy connects us all with the universe and each other, we are all part of it.  This energy helps you live a plain and simple life in harmony with nature.

In life there are times when you must put yourself in order.  During this time, you can do little for others, but your efforts are valuable because by enhancing your powers and abilities through inner development, you can do more for others later on, without causing harm to yourself.

Quote: Once you have peace, double your efforts.

Acknowledge your thoughts, let them go and come back to the freshness of the present moment, by doing this you are sowing seeds of wakefulness in your unconscious. This will help you let go of your habitual ways of doing things, then you can proceed and do something fresh.

We must seek a level of consciousness beyond the intellect. We must study, but not to the point that the emphasis on direct experience is lost.  If we combine the intellect with the emphasis on direct experience, then there will be no barrier to the wordless perception of reality.

Shining the light on yourself will never enlighten you.  Being self-righteous precludes you from being right.  Parading yourself parodies leadership.  Boasting about yourself will never boost your eminence.  Avoid the cultivation of these ego-bloated voids.

The ancient teachings are there to offer you guidance for favorable action in your daily life and, at the same time, to avoid misconduct that invites misfortune.  Consulting these teachings will help you plan for the future and gives you a way to study your past actions.

Quote: Everything is workable.

Impermanence can teach you a lot about how to cheer up.  It’s okay if the thoughts of impermanence scare you, this can make you start asking questions and start you wondering. Maybe you are afraid of the most exciting things you have yet to learn.

There are times when we have someone to walk our spiritual path with us, and the time of parting comes without welcome.  Walk the path together as long as you can, but if the other must leave, do not hold them back.  They won’t suffer; they will just walk a different path.

Trust the intelligence of your body, trust your natural responses and everything will fall into place.  When you speak, speak with quietude and sincerity, then your words will be long lasting.  Being natural in this way, you embrace everything and everything embraces you.

We should not try to combat our own faults directly; the longer and harder we fight them the more victorious they will be.  We fight our faults by making progress in the good, it is the only way.  Take care not to become hardened and obstinate, remain receptive to impressions by continuous self-examination.

Quote: There are no problems, just opportunities.

Let your mind and your heart be big enough to hang out in the space where we’re not entirely certain who is right and who is wrong.  When meeting with people have no agenda.  Just see hear and feel them as they really are, not trying to make them right or wrong.  This is true communication.

We must seek a level of consciousness beyond the intellect.  We must study, but not to the point that the emphasis on direct experience is lost.  If we combine the intellect with the emphasis on direct experience, then there will be no barrier to the wordless perception of reality.

The mind is desperate to fix the river in place.  Possessed by ideas of the past, preoccupied with images of the future, it overlooks the plain truth of the present moment.  Dissolve your mind, let it be quiet, and find peace and clarity in the present moment.

Through daily self-renewal you can continue at the height of your power.  Such a person is in harmony with all things, therefore even great and difficult undertakings succeed.  When studying the past, do not confine yourself to the knowledge you learn, but use that knowledge to give actuality to the past.

Quote: The correct way lies in keeping equal distance between nonbeing and being.

Consistency

Ancient wisdom remains invaluable to daily life.  That’s the main reason our website gives ongoing suggestions such as adopting the ancient practice of daily self-cultivation.  One of the toughest parts of this practice for many people is maintaining consistency.  We looked into the concept a little more to see what modern wisdom has to say.

One dictionary definition of consistency is: “the quality of always behaving or performing in a similar way, or of always happening in a similar way”.   A behavioral research team saw it as: “the act of compliance with one’s own belief, actions, statements, self-concept and self-presentation”.

People who study stumbling blocks to consistency seem to be in general agreement about what they are.  Confusing consistency with intensity is a common one because intensity is almost impossible to sustain on a daily basis. A good example can be found in the efforts of caring for your teeth.  Intensity would involve going to the dentist while consistency involves the few minutes a day brushing and flossing.

Another block is relying on motivation.  You don’t have to feel like doing something to still do it.  Motivation is a wonderful starting place but it won’t carry you through.  The funny thing is that persisting, even when you don’t feel like doing something you’ve committed to, can actually build motivation.

Some people get stuck on the idea of all-or-nothing.  Consistency in daily practice is more successful when discipline is balanced with flexibility. Hexagram 32 of the I Ching provides some wonderful insight into achieving this balance in all areas of life.  Here is the link: Duration…32

Our modern scientists have weighed in by concluding the brain networks really do become rewired when a consistent activity is maintained over time.  One advantage, without going into the medical detail, is brain processing power previously taken up in decision making is freed up for other pursuits.

It has been proven that for most of us consistency increases stability, reduces anxiety and increases self-control – all which contribute to a happier and more contented existence.  Studies have also concluded that consistency goes deep – developing it changes how you think about yourself.  When you do the things you told yourself you’d do, you build self-trust and once you have it, you’re not going to want to lose it.

We asked a person whose conscious practice of daily self-cultivation successfully spans many years for some thoughts on consistency:

“Being consistent with your actions and speech lets others know what they can expect of you.  If you are consistent, others can rely on you to act and do things in a certain way at certain times.  You might even try being consistent with your thoughts.  If your thoughts are ones of loving kindness towards others you will receive the same back.

Don’t confuse consistency with habits, because consistency should be a conscious action whereas habits are generally unconscious.  Habits and your reactions to things can become consistent if you live in the present moment and are aware of them.  Even when making a cup of tea, be aware of being consistent in the way you do it.

In your self-cultivation practice you need to be as consistent as possible, then you will notice changes in your body and the way your practice is changing.  Just going through the motions at a certain time every day and not being consistent in your thoughts and focusing on it, defeats a lot of the purpose of your practice.  Daydreaming in life takes away your ability to be consistent in any meaningful way.

Being consistent will enable you to look at change as a learning experience rather than as a disruption in your life.  Being consistent in your actions, speech and thoughts will enable you to be present most of the time and live a life in harmony with others and nature.“

There are times when the burden of doing something outweighs the joy.  Ancient and modern wisdom agree, if this happens, re-evaluate.  For example, if your daily practice is really not working, try different approaches until you find one where the joy outweighs the burden.

Progress can seem minimal over a long period with daily practice but the yield over time is like compound interest: the more consistency, the more progress until there are significant changes.  As C.S. Lewis wrote: “Isn’t it funny how day by day nothing changes, but when you look back everything is different”.

Fully acknowledge your sadness and the sadness of life, but do not be consumed by it.  Remember your true nature, of balance and completeness, joining vision with practicality, this quality of being continuously awake, will help you remember who you really are.

Life is sometimes compared to the ocean; sometimes turbulent, sometimes calm.  Life, like the ocean, it is vast and deep.  We try to conquer it and understand it, but the wise know there is no other alternative except to accept it, and float here and there, go in and out with the tides.

There is an underlying essence or energy that is inherent in the universe.  Try to find it, you can’t, it permeates everything and everybody; use it and it is inexhaustible.  Using it, our dualities will be forgotten and forms will emerge with incredible depths and dimensions.

If you want to change it is necessary that first the self be understood.  If you do not understand self, you cannot be sincere.  With understanding and sincerity your thoughts will be truthful, and you will be able to change the self, and you will have a path of creativity and development.

Quote: Believe you can do it.

Being ignorant about your emotions or struggling against them only makes matters worse. Become more attentive to your emotions, get to know them better.  To dissolve their power, use your wholehearted intelligent attention, this will help you discover their insubstantial nature.

We speak of opposites as antagonistic elements, but opposites are part of the same entity.  They define one another as black defines white.  They alternate with one another as war alternates with peace.  Whenever something reaches its extreme it changes towards its opposite.

We are taught to distinguish good from evil, agreement from disagreement, this causes us conflict and anger.  Having no desires and accepting things as they are, will give you peace, but you must share this idea with others for we are all part of them, and they are all part of us.

Living a life of sincerity and integrity, is not any guarantee against bad luck or ugly surprises. But life has learned that these traits will improve the odds of success, that working with a natural merit and practicing a natural good can be two of the best rules one can live by.

Quote: Most challenges come in the form of other people.

We need to develop a zest for challenge and for life.  By doing this you will develop a practice that gives you, inspiration and an uplifted feeling.  Life then becomes a process of growing up and you becoming more and more fearless.  This way life becomes a sense of play.

Spring has begun, movement and growth are taking place all around us, go out into nature, enjoy yourself, reel in the coming of spring, rejoice in it and the change of the season.  Go out into the forest, filling your lungs with the breath of the forest, being part of nature.

Embrace simplicity and integrity, consume only the needs of your body and spirit.  Allow your love and concern for others to define your essentiality.  If this is not enough, stay in your center and let all things take their course, thusly all will benefit a hundredfold.

Set your life in order before effecting a plan to start something new.  At the beginning do not take anything lightly and make choices of what to avoid and what you can accept.  There may be difficult times ahead, but with the right support any time is a good time to begin something new.

Quote: Nothing is possible without contemplation.
