Little Wren

A small bird story:  As with many other townhouses, ours has rules stating feed cannot be left outside for the birds. Therefore, at our patio, each bird visitor takes their food “to go” individually.  Especially when the weather makes finding food difficult, it is typical to find little clusters of chickadees (image above), juncos (image below) and a few assorted sparrows appear.  They’ve trained us to have their “order” ready for individual delivery when they perch expectantly on or under the rhododendron.  Usually, 2 or 3 chickadees continue to show up during the summer, sometimes only to take a dip in the bird bath, but other times they let us know they want a treat “to go”.

In the winter of 2022, a tiny stranger appeared on the periphery of the bird crowd.  Even though picked on and chased, it had a presence and tenacity that was quite impressive.  We began tossing the little stranger’s food way off to the side so the other birds didn’t notice it.  Fascinated, we watched this creature with its long, slender beak throw itself on the peanut heart, vigorously hacking away, using the weight of its whole upper body behind the maneuver.

This spring (2024) the little stranger took its own place among the chickadees, juncos and sparrows, hopping around on the branches of the rhododendron, waiting for a turn to dive for a peanut heart.  It did come as a surprise when the spring rush died down, leaving only a token chickadee or two around, to see the tiny stranger appear solo.  And then a wonderful little pattern emerged which lasted for a couple of weeks: a few minutes after retrieving a peanut heart, the little stranger would fly high into the neighboring tree and treat us to a few moments of song – sharp, bright, melodic and beautiful.

The intriguing and diminutive stranger with double charisma and incredible voice is, according to the bird dictionaries, a Bewick’s wren (pronounced “buicks”).

Bewick’s wren’s official name is Thryomanes bewickii and is the only species in the genus Thryomanes. They are about 5.1 inches long and .03-.04 ounces, grey-brown on the upper portion and white below.  Their beautiful long white eyebrow and long tail distinguishes them.

This wren species was named for a British engraver (Thomas Bewick) who was a friend of the famous bird artist, J.J. Audubon.  The author Robert Ridgway wrote this in his “Ornithology of Illinois” in 1889, “No bird more deserves the protection of man than Bewick’s Wren. He does not need man’s encouragement, for he comes of his own accord and installs himself as a member of the community, wherever it suits his taste.  He is found about the cowshed and barn along with the Pewee and Barn Swallow; he investigates the pig-sty; then explores the garden fence, and finally mounts to the roof and pours forth one of the sweetest songs that ever was heard.”

Bewick’s Wrens are still common in much of western North America, but have disappeared from the East.  The eastern decline is apparently due, at least in part, to the range expansion of the House Wren.  The House Wren is suspected of removing eggs from the Bewick’s nests and so as people put up more nesting boxes, the House Wren population seemed to have taken over.

Geographic differences have been observed in the coloring as the Pacific populations being a little darker than the Southwest populations, which tend to a greyer plumage.  Before their decline, the Eastern population was a little more colorful with a touch of red tint in their brown feathers.

Bewick’s wrens are largely monogamous.  Courtship commences when the male begins singing.  He may sometimes take a break from his song in order to chase away any competitors.  Once he and his lady get together, they forage for food together.  The male begins the nest building himself using plant materials and twigs, lining the nest with feathers.  Usually, this next is in the shape of a cup tucker into a nook or cavity.  His lady then joins him to lay 5 – 7 eggs with two broods in a season.  Although the pair stay together for this portion of their lives, they do not remain together throughout the winter, preferring solitude.

The male Bewick’s Wrens sing to attract a mate as well as protecting their own territory.  Both males and females have short calls to express agitation against predators or to keep in touch with their mate while hunting for food.  A Bewick’s sound is quite variable and typically lasts about two seconds with 3-5 distinctive phrases with a mixture of buzzes and trills.

Studies show, when compared with other birds such as Song Sparrows, their songs follow a much more deliberate pattern. One author recorded a set which lasted for almost two minutes with a total of 11 unique songs from one Bewick’s wren in his back yard.

Adult male Bewick’s Wren have their own unique set of songs.  Baby males start life by experimenting and babbling like human babies to copy their father’s songs.  When they grow up and leave home to claim their own territory, their songs change to sound more like their neighbors.  Males have been known to execute over twenty variations to their song pattern.

Both the Native Americans and Celtic people are among those whose history shows a strong interest in the wild life in their vicinity.  These people followed the actions and behavior of animals, drawing deeper meaning, lessons and symbolism which they then applied to their own behavior.  A good example is emulating the Bewick’s Wren courage and persistence or how the couples work together, sharing the work of raising their young.

For the Celts, the wren was considered sacred, aligned with the god Lugh.  Symbolic of transformation and rebirth, wrens were often used in their divination practices.  In Europe and Asia, these birds were associated with good luck and prosperity, bringing good fortune.

Even watching these lively creatures is uplifting – themes of protection, peace, charm, charisma and perseverance are all associated.  A library, internet or in-person nature search is bound to turn up some inspiration for anyone whose spirits may be flagging.

Patience is the antidote to anger, by patience we don’t mean “grin and bear it”.  Instead of reacting suddenly, smell it, look at it and open yourself to seeing what’s there.  The journey of patience involves relaxing, opening to what is happening with a sense of wonder.

Let us not hold ourselves above our fellow human beings, no matter how great the disparity.  If some appear less fortunate then us, is their misfortune their own fault, is it fair to blame them?  To withhold your scorn is already beautiful, but to see how we are all one family is compassion.

There is an underlying energy or essence that permeates all things, it is always there, it is perfect and creates all things.  This energy connects us all with the universe and each other we are all part of it.  This energy helps you live a plain and simple life in harmony with nature.

When your work has ended, look back on your conduct and the consequences of your actions.  If the effects were good, then good fortune will be the result.  It is only by the consequences of your actions and the fruit of your labors that you can judge what to expect.

Quote: Don’t relax, be worried!

When we feel inadequate or unworthy, we want to hold on to what we have and are afraid of feeling worse than we do already.  The cause of our aggression and fear begins to dissolve when we move past this poverty of holding on to things, both physical and mentally.

You must never stop trying to improve yourself, strengthen yourself; by doing this it will make it much easier to live in today’s impure world.  Paradoxically there is nothing to achieve, it is only our minds that convince ourselves we must do something.

Shining the light on yourself will never enlighten you.  Being self-righteous precludes you from being right.  Parading yourself parodies leadership.  Boasting about yourself will never boost your eminence.  Avoid the cultivation of these ego-bloated voids.

Increase and decrease come of their own time.  In a time of scanty resources, you must simplify, this will give you the strength for further undertakings.  Draw on the strength of your inner attitude for what lacks externally.  Even with slender means the sentiment of the heart can be expressed.

Quote: Living beyond concerns, about status, needs, and desire can be truly liberating.

When we train in the art of peace, even though we have noble intentions we are not given any promises that all will be okay. Instead, simply look deeply at joy and sorrow, hoping and fearing, laughter and crying, at all that lives and dies.  We learn that which truly brings peace is gratitude and tenderness.

There is nothing in the sky, nobody lives your life but you.  Whatever you believe in terms of deities is fine.  It is all individual preferences; and ultimately means self-awareness.  There is something beyond the diversity of deities and that is the absolute, formless, nameless, and faceless.

There is a powerful force that exists that is always available to you.  When clarity and purity are cultivated, it reveals itself.  When sincerity is unconditional it unveils itself.  If you are willing to live by it, you will see it everywhere, even in the most ordinary things.

With the spirit of sincerity and mutual respect, you are able to create a harmonious situation anywhere, in any circumstances.  If a family is in harmony, then the neighbourhood will be in harmony.  If neighbourhoods are in harmony, then the county will be in harmony.

Quote: You create my reality, I create yours.

Emotional turmoil begins with an initial perception of a sight, sound, or thought, which leads to a feeling of discomfort.  When you feel that initial tug, remain steady, relax into the energy you feel, stay with the experience, let the energy move through you without getting stuck.

There is a universal energy that permeates all things.  This energy is always available to you at any time that you need it.  We call it by many names, but it is nameless and is indescribable.  It has been there forever and will always be there, everything originates from it.

The mind is desperate to fix the river in place.  Possessed by ideas of the past, preoccupied with images of the future, it overlooks the plain truth of the present moment.  Dissolve your mind, let it be quiet, and find peace and clarity in the present moment.

If you want to act on something, first, you must have a clear understanding of it.  If it is a problem that you don’t understand fully you can just act on the parts you are clear on, thus reducing the problem a little at a time until the parts that are not clear are all that are left.

Quote: When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.

Caring for things, in moments of appreciation, in moments of gratitude, letting go of holding on to ourselves, and looking at the world around us; whenever we connect with sorrow, or joy, dropping our resentments and complaints; this will awaken our heart.

Don’t saddle yourself with extra responsibilities, keep your life simple, give up as much as possible.  Renounce unnecessary cravings and desires, leave behind the trappings of wealth and success.  Live in the moment, it brings knowledge, and it brings joy.

There is an underlying essence or energy that is inherent in the universe, try to find it you can’t, it permeates everything and everybody, use it and it is inexhaustible.  Using it, our dualities will be forgotten and forms will emerge with incredible depths and dimensions.

The purpose of the ancient teachings is to offer guidance in one’s daily life and to avoid misconduct.  They show us how to explore natural and social phenomena.  They show us how to use our abilities and offer them to all without selfish motives.

Quote: When a caterpillar thought her world was over, she became a butterfly.

If we try to protect ourselves from suffering, we become fearful and alienated, caring only for the people close to us.  If we primarily try to shield ourselves from discomfort we suffer, yet if we don’t close off and let our heart hurt, we discover our kinship with all beings.

It is good to have sacred sites in the world, and it is good for us to go on pilgrimages.  Ultimately it is not the place that is important, it is what you feel that is lasting.  Go with a humble attitude and let your heart be moved by what you experience.

We are stuffed with trivia, the more trivia the more anxieties.  We are led to believe consequences are grave when we fail to distinguish good from evil.  Don’t become obsessed with trivialities; be open and accept all things as they are and share this simple idea with others.

When times are bad submit to them and remain quiet.  It may be impossible to counteract the conditions of the time; it is not cowardice but wisdom to submit and avoid actions.  A law of nature is at work; evil is not destructive to the good alone but inevitably destroys itself as well.

Quote: Deem the needs, desires, and ambitions of others as valuable as your own.

There is often a discrepancy between our ideals and what we encounter.  It’s the rub between these two things, the squeeze between vision and reality that causes you to grow up, wake up, to be alive and compassionate.  This rub is one of our most productive places to learn about yourself.

A self-cultivation practice begins with the premise that you already have a pure spirit and only need to clear away the obfuscations.  In our daily practice we must work on both our physical and mental bodies in order to achieve results that are long lasting.

Embrace simplicity and integrity, consume only the needs of your body and spirit.  Allow your love and concern for others to define your essentiality.  If this is not enough, stay in your center and let all things take their course, thusly all will benefit a hundredfold.

Only a collective moral force can unite the world, such times of unification will leave great achievements.  Problems usually come because of unexpected events against which we are not forewarned.  To achieve great things, prepare for unforeseen events, or unexpected change.

Quote: Life is ever too important a thing as to talk seriously about. Oscar Wilde

When others have problems, let them be, do not give advice or try to solve their problems for them.  If they ask you for support, listen attentively, you will find this to be the most help you can give them. They know their problems best and usually will come up with a solution on their own.

It is good to have sacred sites in the world, and it is good for us to go on pilgrimages.  Ultimately it is not the place that is important, it is what you feel that is lasting.  Go with a humble attitude and let your heart be moved by what you experience.

There is no one method for attaining realization, to regard one method as the right one is to create duality which will delay your understanding of the truth.  Always keep your attitude unstructured, this will give you the freedom to learn and understand the truth.

Excess and insufficiency are going beyond the middle way.  Generally, insufficiency is better than excess.  When you accomplish small things, you will be able to judge if it is enough or not enough and be able to adjust your reactions so that you can stay in balance.

Quote: Attract light not to thwart the darkness, but to illuminate your path.

We don’t open our hearts and minds to others, because it confuses us, and we don’t feel brave or sane enough to open up.  To help us open up, look clearly and compassionately at ourselves, feel confident and fearless about looking into someone else’s eyes.

The body has three treasures: essence, breath, and spirit.  Essence is the biochemical aspect of your body nurtured by the food you eat.  To build your breath, exercise diligently.  Paying attention to the food you eat and exercising the body is the basis of your spiritual practice.

If you want to lead people keep your words in harmony with your actions.  Doing this, the people you lead will feel a sense of accomplishment because you have become part of those you lead.  You blend so naturally with them they will feel they did the task by themselves.

If you want to practice virtue, you first must become virtuous yourself.  The practice of virtue is the study of the body, the mind, nature, and life. Practice the worthy qualities about yourself a little each day and work diligently on your bad habits by changing your belief in them.

Quote: In the long run, the sharpest weapon of all is a kind and gentle spirit.  Anne Frank
