We are stuck in the same patterns of grasping and fixating, which cause the same thoughts and reactions to occur over and over again.  When we see this, even just for a second, explore these patterns and relax, we will naturally discover the knack of stopping these reoccurrences.

When you feel in the zone or that life is going right, the feeling is not something you can formulate or possess, and if you try to find it, you cannot.  The way it comes to you is by being open and focused on what you are doing and then, as if from nowhere, the feeling comes.

Whether the form is a person or a star, the process is the same.  First, the subtle energy exists. Next it becomes manifest and takes on life.  After a time, the life passes away, but the subtle energy goes on, either returning to the subtle realm, where it remains, or once again attaching to manifest things.

When a relationship or a business is in a period of abundance and prosperity, great caution should be taken to prevent disharmony and overdoing.  People become used to an easy situation, but they have a tendency to neglect the natural law of cause and effect.

Quote: To break a habit, you have to be aware of it, motivated to change, and have a strategy to replace it.

The journey to peace and happiness is a process of letting go of attachments, both physical and mental.  To do this open your heart up and surrender to life, but we cannot do this on certain occasions or situations, our surrender must be constant and genuine all the time.

If your mind is scattered, its images in disarray, you cannot move in a clear direction, the result is confusion and unhappiness.  A mind that is clearly focused on a single point or idea, like in contemplation or meditation, is able to receive all things and abide in tranquility.

Knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom.  When you master yourself, you do not have to master others. When you know you have enough then you are truly wealthy.  Find your roots and nourish them and you will know longevity.

In society conflicts are unavoidable, sometimes you have to give up your own interests and ideas to chime in with others but continue to do what you intuitively know is right.  However, you must adapt to the demands of the time rather than wear yourself out resisting.

Quote: What I see depends on how I look and for how long.

We can dissolve the sense of dualism between us and them, between this and that, between here and there, by going to places and enter situations that scare us and that we find difficult and wish to push away.  We must befriend the idea that we can be wrong and let go of the feelings of guilt or shame.

Your flow of life can be affected by simply altering your circumstances.  The flow of energy moves constantly according to fixed points that exist at any given moment; by manipulating these points we can change the flow.  Freedom to choose and change belongs to us.

We live a bewildered life, we struggle to know things, like whether there is a purpose to this existence.  Just look behind all this and see the joy and simplicity in all things.  Remain centered and act from your heart, then all things will be in harmony, and you will be at peace.

Nourishing yourself is not a matter of the food you eat, it is a matter benevolence, justice, and enlightened qualities.  The way to fill oneself with benevolence, justice and enlightenment qualities is all about seeking them by yourself, not relying on others.

Quote: Only a collective moral force can unite the world.

Stop struggling, it’s not about winning or losing, but about ceasing to struggle with life and relax as it is.  That is what we are doing in our self-cultivation practice, it’s about relaxing without struggling.  Just be and let this attitude spread to the rest of your life.

You should be sensitive to where you situate yourself in the world.  Select a place that is known to be conducive to what you want to achieve, then narrow your choice by what you see and feel.  Don’t become attached to any one place as the energies will change.

Your mind is like the sky, if its cloudy you will not see it, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there.  All our miseries and conflicts are created by the activity of the mind.  Keep your mind still, look inside, and see the truth that is always available, always responsive.

If you are too firm in character, you will have difficulty dealing with others.  If not firm enough, you will have difficulty dealing with the course of life.  Do not be concerned whether your plans will fail or succeed, just proceed with life gradually and steadily.

Quote: Deciding what to pay attention to makes our reality.

Negative shame is accompanied by guilt and self denigration, it is pointless and no help to us, in fact it will cause us harm.  Positive shame is when we have harmed ourselves or anyone else, and feel sorry for having done so, this allows us to grow from our mistakes.

Today is the middle day of the year.  Once you reach the centre of anything you can dominate the whole.  In life we establish goals and parameters to define the scope of most everything we do.  Knowing when you have reached the centre of your endeavour it makes perseverance easier.

These ancient words are not the medicine, only the prescription; not the destination, but a map to help you reach it.  Seeing it with your own eyes, hearing it with your own ears, is the only way to the destination.  When you get there your mind will be quiet and still.

Difficulties and obstructions throw a man back on himself.  Do not blame others for your mistakes, look for the errors within yourself, and through this introspection, any obstruction becomes an occasion for inner enrichment and education.

Quote: Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass; it’s about learning to dance in the rain.

Hope and fear is a feeling with two sides, as long as there is one there is always the other.  Hope and fear come as a sense that we lack something, and we are unable to sit, relax, and be ourselves.  If we hold on to hope and fear, they rob us of the present moment.

All the diversity in our lives is merely a manifestation of our minds.  If we want simplicity and tranquility, we need only go to the center of our active mind, where it is empty and still.  Diversity comes from our active minds and our origins come from the central void.

Discover your truth, then you will realize the world is perfect as it is, and it can’t be improved.  See things as they are without trying to control them, let things go their own way.  Treat our planet with care, moderation, and love, let go of things; just stay in your center.

Any development, to be successful, must proceed gradually and be allowed to take its course, being hasty would not be wise.  Penetrating gentleness is the outer form that should proceed from inner calm, along with perseverance, prevents slow progress from dwindling into nothing.

Quote: When we strive to become better than we are, everything around us becomes better too.

Letting go of your security and just being in the moment may seem uncomfortable and frightening, but it gives you a chance to see the world as it is.  Be inquisitive about the unknown and the unanswerable question of what comes next because this awakens your own wisdom mind.

The wise remain humble so that others are not aroused against them.  Avoid all conflict whenever possible. If conflict or trouble seeks you out, use only the minimum amount force required to deal with it, to do more would be to fall into excess resistance.

If you are a pattern to the world, this will create an inner strength in you and there will be nothing you can’t do.  To become a pattern to the world, accept the world as it is, and return to the innocence of childhood, and become receptive to all that comes your way like a newborn.

A person must be firm and flexible in order to manage one’s affairs successfully.  If your actions are too firm, you will be met by resistance and nothing can be accomplished.  If you are too flexible you can damage your own self.  Learning the balance between both will insure harmony.

Quote: Time is irrelevant, it’s what you do with it that is relevant.

We try to manifest things we desire and when they come to us, we are still not satisfied.  Why not live life and let things come to you, accept whatever it brings, and do not try to control the outcome.  This will bring you freedom and everything you need.

Caring for things, never waste anything.  Caring for people, never abandon anybody.  Living this way, you can live a satisfied, simple and natural life.  If you feel you have found your way, then teach those who are still finding their way.  These people are your greatest sources of wisdom.

To resolve any conflict, sit down with your adversary face to face.  Generally, dispute arises from not having the flexibility in considering the others’ opinion.  Whether you win or lose is not enjoyable, it is better to solve the dispute before it goes too far, usually by meeting your opponent halfway.

Quote: When unexpected changes occur look for the opportunity it brings you.

We cannot connect with our fundamental wealth of who we are as long as we are buying into the advertisement hype that we have to be someone else, that we have to smell different, or look different.  Connect to your wealth by sharing your feelings of who you really are with others.

When teaching others, you must be firm, consistent, and patient.  You may have to correct their mistakes or the bad habits they develop.  However, when it comes to their curiosity, individuality, or initiative, then there should never be any discouragement.

There are two kinds of wisdom.  The first is worldly wisdom, which is a conceptual understanding of your experiences, this inhibits your direct understanding of the truth.  The second kind, integral wisdom, involves a direct participation in every moment, with no mental concepts or attitudes.

If we remain at the mercy of moods, of hope, and of fear, aroused by the outer world, we lose our inner consistency of character.  Then our experiences are merely effects produced by the outside world, not experiences evoked by our own true nature.

Quote: By delegating you pass on the worry.

Little Wren

A small bird story:  As with many other townhouses, ours has rules stating feed cannot be left outside for the birds. Therefore, at our patio, each bird visitor takes their food “to go” individually.  Especially when the weather makes finding food difficult, it is typical to find little clusters of chickadees (image above), juncos (image below) and a few assorted sparrows appear.  They’ve trained us to have their “order” ready for individual delivery when they perch expectantly on or under the rhododendron.  Usually, 2 or 3 chickadees continue to show up during the summer, sometimes only to take a dip in the bird bath, but other times they let us know they want a treat “to go”.

In the winter of 2022, a tiny stranger appeared on the periphery of the bird crowd.  Even though picked on and chased, it had a presence and tenacity that was quite impressive.  We began tossing the little stranger’s food way off to the side so the other birds didn’t notice it.  Fascinated, we watched this creature with its long, slender beak throw itself on the peanut heart, vigorously hacking away, using the weight of its whole upper body behind the maneuver.

This spring (2024) the little stranger took its own place among the chickadees, juncos and sparrows, hopping around on the branches of the rhododendron, waiting for a turn to dive for a peanut heart.  It did come as a surprise when the spring rush died down, leaving only a token chickadee or two around, to see the tiny stranger appear solo.  And then a wonderful little pattern emerged which lasted for a couple of weeks: a few minutes after retrieving a peanut heart, the little stranger would fly high into the neighboring tree and treat us to a few moments of song – sharp, bright, melodic and beautiful.

The intriguing and diminutive stranger with double charisma and incredible voice is, according to the bird dictionaries, a Bewick’s wren (pronounced “buicks”).

Bewick’s wren’s official name is Thryomanes bewickii and is the only species in the genus Thryomanes. They are about 5.1 inches long and .03-.04 ounces, grey-brown on the upper portion and white below.  Their beautiful long white eyebrow and long tail distinguishes them.

This wren species was named for a British engraver (Thomas Bewick) who was a friend of the famous bird artist, J.J. Audubon.  The author Robert Ridgway wrote this in his “Ornithology of Illinois” in 1889, “No bird more deserves the protection of man than Bewick’s Wren. He does not need man’s encouragement, for he comes of his own accord and installs himself as a member of the community, wherever it suits his taste.  He is found about the cowshed and barn along with the Pewee and Barn Swallow; he investigates the pig-sty; then explores the garden fence, and finally mounts to the roof and pours forth one of the sweetest songs that ever was heard.”

Bewick’s Wrens are still common in much of western North America, but have disappeared from the East.  The eastern decline is apparently due, at least in part, to the range expansion of the House Wren.  The House Wren is suspected of removing eggs from the Bewick’s nests and so as people put up more nesting boxes, the House Wren population seemed to have taken over.

Geographic differences have been observed in the coloring as the Pacific populations being a little darker than the Southwest populations, which tend to a greyer plumage.  Before their decline, the Eastern population was a little more colorful with a touch of red tint in their brown feathers.

Bewick’s wrens are largely monogamous.  Courtship commences when the male begins singing.  He may sometimes take a break from his song in order to chase away any competitors.  Once he and his lady get together, they forage for food together.  The male begins the nest building himself using plant materials and twigs, lining the nest with feathers.  Usually, this next is in the shape of a cup tucker into a nook or cavity.  His lady then joins him to lay 5 – 7 eggs with two broods in a season.  Although the pair stay together for this portion of their lives, they do not remain together throughout the winter, preferring solitude.

The male Bewick’s Wrens sing to attract a mate as well as protecting their own territory.  Both males and females have short calls to express agitation against predators or to keep in touch with their mate while hunting for food.  A Bewick’s sound is quite variable and typically lasts about two seconds with 3-5 distinctive phrases with a mixture of buzzes and trills.

Studies show, when compared with other birds such as Song Sparrows, their songs follow a much more deliberate pattern. One author recorded a set which lasted for almost two minutes with a total of 11 unique songs from one Bewick’s wren in his back yard.

Adult male Bewick’s Wren have their own unique set of songs.  Baby males start life by experimenting and babbling like human babies to copy their father’s songs.  When they grow up and leave home to claim their own territory, their songs change to sound more like their neighbors.  Males have been known to execute over twenty variations to their song pattern.

Both the Native Americans and Celtic people are among those whose history shows a strong interest in the wild life in their vicinity.  These people followed the actions and behavior of animals, drawing deeper meaning, lessons and symbolism which they then applied to their own behavior.  A good example is emulating the Bewick’s Wren courage and persistence or how the couples work together, sharing the work of raising their young.

For the Celts, the wren was considered sacred, aligned with the god Lugh.  Symbolic of transformation and rebirth, wrens were often used in their divination practices.  In Europe and Asia, these birds were associated with good luck and prosperity, bringing good fortune.

Even watching these lively creatures is uplifting – themes of protection, peace, charm, charisma and perseverance are all associated.  A library, internet or in-person nature search is bound to turn up some inspiration for anyone whose spirits may be flagging.
