When others have problems, let them be, do not give advice or try to solve their problems for them.  If they ask you for support, listen attentively, you will find this to be the most help you can give them. They know their problems best and usually will come up with a solution on their own.

It is good to have sacred sites in the world, and it is good for us to go on pilgrimages.  Ultimately it is not the place that is important, it is what you feel that is lasting.  Go with a humble attitude and let your heart be moved by what you experience.

There is no one method for attaining realization, to regard one method as the right one is to create duality which will delay your understanding of the truth.  Always keep your attitude unstructured, this will give you the freedom to learn and understand the truth.

Excess and insufficiency are going beyond the middle way.  Generally, insufficiency is better than excess.  When you accomplish small things, you will be able to judge if it is enough or not enough and be able to adjust your reactions so that you can stay in balance.

Quote: Attract light not to thwart the darkness, but to illuminate your path.

We don’t open our hearts and minds to others, because it confuses us, and we don’t feel brave or sane enough to open up.  To help us open up, look clearly and compassionately at ourselves, feel confident and fearless about looking into someone else’s eyes.

The body has three treasures: essence, breath, and spirit.  Essence is the biochemical aspect of your body nurtured by the food you eat.  To build your breath, exercise diligently.  Paying attention to the food you eat and exercising the body is the basis of your spiritual practice.

If you want to lead people keep your words in harmony with your actions.  Doing this, the people you lead will feel a sense of accomplishment because you have become part of those you lead.  You blend so naturally with them they will feel they did the task by themselves.

If you want to practice virtue, you first must become virtuous yourself.  The practice of virtue is the study of the body, the mind, nature, and life. Practice the worthy qualities about yourself a little each day and work diligently on your bad habits by changing your belief in them.

Quote: In the long run, the sharpest weapon of all is a kind and gentle spirit.  Anne Frank

Whenever you feel uncomfortable and don’t know what to do, find some place to look at the openness of the sky and experience the freshness, free of hope and fear, just completely open.  This open space permeates everything and is available to us every moment of our lives.

We live in a world where selfless sharing of knowledge is no longer a virtue.  Many people regard knowledge as a commodity to be packaged and sold. The more knowledge you give away, the more will come to you.  Be compassionate to others, what do you have to fear by being open?

The mind is originally empty, and when it remains empty, without grasping or rejecting it can respond to natural things without prejudice.  Your mind should be like a mirror reflecting everything, never refusing to show anything and not retaining anything.  The mind should be as open as this.

It is important not to get complacent about success.  Do not skip any stages in your progress, go slowly step by step as though hesitant.  It is important to remain mindful, conscientious, and consistent.  Only such calm steady progress overleaping nothing, leads you to your goals.

Whether we are talking, eating, listening, or whatever we are doing, the reason we are here in this world is to study ourselves.  We study ourselves to find out how vast and uncomplicated our minds really are.  We can only find this unbiased truth by our own direct experiences.

Meditation gives you the opportunity to disengage in everyday activities.  Give your mind a rest for a few minutes each day and give your body a chance to draw energy from the earth.  Don’t do anything except to sit quietly letting the thoughts go and bringing the mind home.

Attachment prevents the growth of ones true being.  Loving, hating, and expectations are all attachments.  Stay attached to nothing and you can relate to everyone with an unstructured attitude.  Staying unattached you can benefit all things, simply learning and being.

To accomplish large undertakings you should start off with a plan and small goals.  The accumulation of these small steps will eventually lead you to the completion of the larger task.  If you have a modest attitude, you will be able to find able helpers to assist you.

Quote: Make your public and private life the same.

Trying to tie up all the loose ends and finally getting it right is rejecting a lot of life’s basic experiences.  The essence of life is it is challenging.  Sometimes sweet, sometimes bitter.  Sometimes you are tense, sometimes relaxed and open.  To live life fully is to experience each moment as completely new and fresh.

No one spiritual system is superior to another.  Each of us should have a philosophy and practice that works for us and should be happy once we find it. We should help those who are interested in the spirituality we believe in, but none of us should behave condescendingly towards other’s practice.

Can you let go of dualities and embrace life without skepticism or panic?  Then you will be able to reach the heart of oneness.  Avoid thinking of the Oneness as unusual, exalted, sublime, transcendental; it is beyond all that.  It is simply the direct essential and complete truth.

During the process of development, progress frequently comes to a standstill.  There might be an obstruction owing to one’s lack of experience or exterior circumstances.  In this situation store up your energy, preparing for your next move but remain calm and persistent.

Quote: Do not entangle yourselves with the multitudes and keep to your principals.

What we regard as obstacles are not really our enemies but could be considered our teachers and friends.  What we call obstacles is the way our experiences teach us where we are stuck.  How we experience obstacles depends mostly on our relationship with ourselves.

The diversity and contradictions of existence confuse us, and appearances can deceive us.  Once you unite all elements within yourself, uniting the female and male, the light that dispels darkness appears. This light is your inner master and brings clarity and awareness.

Hope and fear are both phantoms that arise from thinking about yourself.  When we don’t see the self as self what do we have to fear?  See the world as yourself, treat the world as yourself, love the world as yourself, have faith in the way things are, then you can care for all things.

True joy comes from within, but we are tempted by diversions that come streaming in from without.  Build your inner stability and strength, then amusements and outside indulgences will not be tempting.  Do not depend on external influences to control your life.

Quote : The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking.  It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.

Continuing our Flower Power series

Thyme

How would it be to live with Thyme?

The world of thyme may be larger than you think.  With their dynamic fragrances, delicate blossoms and variety of growing habits, thyme provides a little something for everyone.

While this article deals with the most common culinary type of thyme (Thymus vulgaris), it is worth taking a look at the more than 200 different species and numerous varieties.  There are creeping ground covers, upright shrubs and many others with various leaf shapes and flower colors.  When perennial dwarf thyme shrubs are planted, for example, gardens can become veritable bee pastures.

Of the varieties, only about half a dozen thyme plants are considered suitable for cooking.  The common Thymus vulgaris is one, but there are others such as Lemon, Oregano-scented, Orange and Caraway thymes which add unique flavor and fragrance to food.

A little background….

Thyme is of the genus Thymus and of the mint family Lamiaceae, which means it is related to other popular herbs such as sage and lavender.

Indigenous to the Mediterranean area, thyme was cultivated by the Ancient Egyptians and Greeks.  The spread of thyme throughout Europe was thought to happen via the Romans as they used it for so many purposes, ascetic as well as culinary.  Wild thyme still thrives in southern Europe, North Africa and the mountains of northeastern America.

The medicinal use and value of thyme has an incredibly long history going back to the Sumerians (3000 BCE) who used it as an antiseptic.  It is a powerful soother for coughs and bronchitis, has muscle-relaxant effects and alleviates indigestion as well as numerous other effects.  Thymol, thyme’s main aromatic component, is responsible for the plant’s antibiotic and antiseptic properties.  Thymol is found in many commercial products such as the mouthwash Listerine, hand sanitizers and acne treatments.

Growing Thyme Indoors:

Thyme (thymus vulgaris) is culinary, aromatic and beautiful – some find their kitchen window perfectly situated so as to have a constant supply of fresh seasoning.  It is a wonderful plant to grow indoors as long as it has at least 6 hours of sunlight and doesn’t get too soggy.  Containers or pots are a great way to make sure the plant gets the conditions it needs because the pot can be easily moved as needed.

A terracotta or clay pot with drainage holes works well for thyme because it allows the herb to dry out between waterings so the roots don’t stay waterlogged.  Thyme doesn’t seem to do well pots that are too small so it is best to use a pot that at least 6 – 7” (5 liter) with some gravel in the bottom.   Fill the pot with a compost mix which is not too nutrient rich as these plants fare better with a light, airy structure low in nutrients.

Every year or two you may want to repot thyme or more often if it has outgrown its pot.  Usually, spring or autumn is the best time to repot – you may even want to take some divisions and start some new thyme plants.

Harvesting Thyme:

Once your plant has plenty of foliage you can cut off stems, rinse them and then pick off the leaves.  Or you can just run your thumb and index finger down the length to push the leaves off.

Chopped or whole, the leaves add flavor to sauces, soups and many other foods.  Some cooks keep the leaves on the stems and allow them to stew when making stock, only straining them out after cooking.  The leaves can be dried by spreading them on a baking sheet for a day or two.

How to use Thyme:

In France thyme is tied together with other fresh herbs such as parsley, rosemary and bay leaf in a “bouquet garni” which is added to soups, stews or sauces and removed just before serving.  In the Middle East thyme is an important component of zahtar and dukka – two of their main seasoning combination.  Another culture which relies heavily on thyme in their cook are the America Creole of New Orleans.

Thyme’s flavor retains much of its flavor when it is dried, unlike many other culinary herbs.  If a recipe calls for 1 tsp. of dried thyme, you can substitute a tablespoon of chopped fresh thyme (and vice versa).  If adding the dried variety, it is best to add it near the beginning of the cooking so the flavor can infuse into the dish.  Actually, long and slow cooking improves the flavor of thyme which is, again, is unlike other herbs.  Thyme sprigs also are very attractive as a garnish.

An intriguing recipe directs one to gently heat raw honey and then add thyme leaves and flowers.  After covering and leaving the mixture in a warm spot for a time, the honey will taste strongly of thyme and can be used by the spoonful or to sweeten tea.

For those who like astrological associations, Thyme is linked with the planet Venus as well as the signs of Taurus, Libra and Cancer.  Venus’s symbolism is aligned with love, love of beauty, relating to others and the true power of authentic attraction.

The word “thyme” is thought to be a derivative of the Greek word “thymos” which was associated with “fumigation” (as in the burning of incense in their temples).  There were countless ways the ancient Greeks utilized the fragrance of thyme – in bathing, rituals, as hair decoration and more – all to enhance the style, poise and attractiveness of the wearer.

There is also another aspect to the Greek association.  Some believe this plant’s name came from the Greek word “thymus” which meant courage.  The warriors of ancient Greece were massaged with the oil of thyme in order to ensure they remained brave.  These ancient warriors took thyme into battle because they believed it enhanced their energy on a physical level but also gave them a sense of clarity and direction for their soul, providing mental and spiritual abilities needed to attend to their destiny.

In modern herbalism there is a belief we can all use more Thyme as it is considered the oil of releasing and forgiveness, believed to remove negativity and leave the heart open.

With all that, and much more we’ve not covered, maybe some time with Thyme could be a good idea?

Do not judge or try to grasp whatever arises in your mind. What we call good or bad we should simply acknowledge as just thinking.  Let all thoughts come and go as if touching a bubble with a feather.  This practice prepares us to stop struggling and discover a fresh unbiased state of being.

There are two extremes, the rulers who belief in censorship and the creative who feel they should have no limits to their freedom.  If you must rule, use compassion as your standard; if you create, find your satisfaction in self-expression and avoid the extremes.

Reflect whatever appears without judgement, whether it be a flower or a heap of garbage, a criminal or saint.  Whatever happens is all right.  Treat your own anger or grief just as you would treat an angry or grieving child, with compassion.

Generally, when something is complete, we let the success turn our heads and look for something else to do.  When something is complete, we should guide its course to the start of another new achievement, this way the first achievement will not start to decay or decline.

Quote: The way to get out of the box is to no longer believe in the box.

Let things that enter your life wake you up; to do this be open, be curious, accept everything that comes along and let it teach you what it will.  You can try to do everything to make your world perfect, but the old stuff always appears, until you have learned your lesson.

If you are confronted with a pivotal decision, see if staying your course will give you what you want.  If not, change, no matter how deeply that it disrupts your routines.  Study precedence and use the wisdom of others to help you make the necessary change.

Does one thing appeal to you more than another?  If so then your mind is separated.  Keep your mind free of divisions and distinctions.  When your mind is detached, simple, and quiet then all things exist in harmony. This way you begin to perceive the subtle truth.

By contemplating the forms that exist in nature, we come to understand the times and its changing demands.  Through contemplation of the forms existing in society it becomes possible to shape the world.  By this contemplation the world as ideas become manifest.

Quote: Humility is one of the highest virtues.

Being alone is usually something we choose not to invite in, we desire to escape it and find someone to keep us company.  Try having a relaxed, even curious relationship with loneliness, this can help us discover things about ourselves and begin to enjoy ourselves more.

Our ignorance usually obscures our awareness of life and its true meaning.  Life and its meaning is there to experience anytime you want to open yourself up to it.  You don’t have to go to a mountain top or a cave to find the meaning of life.  It is about feeling it and it’s always right there in front of you.

Our ego is fascinated by the realms of the senses, going from one desire to the next, one conflict to the next, and one self-centered idea to the next.  Keep your mind from wandering, keep to your original oneness, let events take their natural course, and understand things by letting them go.

Removing old impurities does not mean forgetting things, forgetting the body, extinguishing the mind and stopping thoughts. It is necessary to practice removing impurities doing everyday activities, and at the same time looking for ways to cultivate virtue.

Quote:  The most important thing in science is not so much to obtain new facts as to discover new ways of thinking about them.
