The continual search for pleasure or security, searching for a more comfortable situation at the domestic or spiritual level, are some of the things that keep us unhappy. We will never have it all together, there is only this moment to live. If you live in the moment, you will find the joy you are seeking.
It is a misconception that spirituality brings us happiness because there is no such thing. Sadness still comes to the wise, but unlike most people, their clarity of mind allows them to see beyond the temporal emotionalism of the moment. They see happiness and sorrow as the same thing.
If you want to reach a state of knowing you cannot do this by solely striving for it to benefit yourself. This state of knowing can only be achieved by practicing undiscriminating virtue and service. This way the ultimate subtle truths and inner knowing will follow.
A decline after abundance is the law of nature. In human affairs we can delay the coming of decline by careful management. In periods of abundance, we become used to an easy situation, that is the time for caution and careful planning.
