A self-cultivation practice is not about trying to throw ourselves away and becoming something better. It’s about befriending what we already have. That’s what we study, that’s what we come to know with tremendous curiosity and interest.
Let us not hold ourselves above our fellow human beings, no matter how great the disparity. To withhold your scorn is already beautiful, but to see how we are all one family is compassion. Is their misfortune their own fault? Is it fair to blame them?
Knowing others is intelligence, knowing yourself is true wisdom. When you master yourself, you do not have to master others. When you know you have enough, then you are truly wealthy. Find your roots and nourish them and you will know longevity.
In difficult times do not allow yourself to be turned from your principles. If you are unable to exert influence because the fundamentals are all wrong and fruitful activity is rendered impossible, do not accept dazzling offers to take part in public activity. Hide your work and withdraw into seclusion.
Quote: Without an understanding of who we are, we cannot truly advance.
