When we see suffering in life, ours or others, we can be curious, notice it and be mindful of our reactions to it. Our reactions are usually habitual, instead we could be aware of the next impulse that comes up and how we spin off from there, whether good or bad, without judgement or any intention.
It is important to spend time with a teacher, but remember all teachings are mere references. Your goal should be to bring yourself to a state of independence. The true experience is living your own life, even the holiest of words are just words.
If you are a pattern to the world, this will create an inner strength in you and there will be nothing you can’t do. To become a pattern to the world, accept the world as it is and return to the innocence of childhood; become receptive to all that comes your way like a newborn.
The ancients taught being humble was one of the highest virtues. Being humble is not about holding yourself back. Instead, it’s acting positively by doing things with others cooperatively and harmoniously. Respect and treat everybody equally, this is true humility.
