As long as we run away from discomfort we are going to get caught in a cycle of unhappiness and disappointment. Instead ask yourself, “Can I touch the center of my pain? Can I sit with suffering, yours and mine, without trying to make it go away and let it open my heart?”
Rather than shutting away the unpleasant aspects of ourselves, we must take them all out and examine them. Daily introspection brings harmony to all our facets. Those aspects that are not good can be dissolved, those that are advantageous can be cultivated.
Does one thing appeal to you more than another? If so, then your mind is separated. Keep your mind free of divisions and distinctions. When your mind is detached, simple and quiet, then all things exist in harmony; this way you begin to perceive the subtle truth.
There are two kinds of watching. Subjective deals with oneself, it is used to examine your inner motives. Objective deals with others; it is to watch others reactions to your conduct. The wisdom of watching is like looking into a mirror, checking one’s intention and outward conduct.
