There is often a discrepancy between our ideals and what we encounter. It’s the rub between these two things, the squeeze between vision and reality that causes you to grow up, wake up, to be alive and compassionate. This rub is one of our most productive places to learn about yourself.
If your mind is scattered, its images in disarray, you cannot move in a clear direction, the result is confusion and unhappiness. A mind that is clearly focused on a single point or idea, like in contemplation or meditation is able to receive all things and abide in tranquility.
The ancients didn’t over emphasize the intellect, but integrated mind, body, and spirit in all things. This allowed them to become masters of knowledge rather than victims of concepts. They valued old ways that had been proven effective and valued new ways if they could be proven effective.
When your work has ended, look back on your conduct and the consequences of your actions. If the effects were good, then good fortune will be the result. It is only by the consequences of your actions and the fruit of your labors that you can judge what to expect.
