Most thinking is tied to some sensory image, we need this way of thinking to function in the everyday world. We need to eliminate this dualistic thinking in order to reach a state of mind that does not cling to external forms, leading to peace within.
When we emphasize just the body in self-cultivation, with the exclusion of mind or spirit, we are not balanced and this leads to exhaustion. Self-cultivation involves the holistic integration of mind, body and spirit, this way you achieve unity within and without.
In times of abundance, treasure and use the plenitude well and sustain the times of abundance as long as possible. In times of decline, explore new possibilities rather than staying with your old ways. The key is not to dwell on old ways and trivial things.
