To feel loving kindness for others we first must train in being honest, loving and compassionate towards ourselves. Doing this we sow seeds of our future well-being and gradually become aware of what causes happiness, as well as what causes distress.
Self-cultivation is an endeavor we take up because it is our ultimate mode of being. If we get nothing for it, we should not be bothered. What we do get is a greater inner understanding of life and ourselves.
The mind is desperate to fix the river in place. Possessed by ideas of the past, preoccupied with images of the future, it overlooks the plain truth of the present moment. Dissolve your mind, let it be quiet and find peace and clarity in your life.
Contemplation of the meaning of the underlying workings of the universe will enable you to apprehend the universe’s natural laws. It will enable you to give expression to these laws in one’s own person. Contemplation of the action of others will allow you to put yourself in another’s place and understand his motives.
