Negative shame is accompanied by guilt and self-denigration. It is pointless and no help to us; in fact, it will cause us harm. Positive shame is when we have harmed ourselves or anyone else and feel sorry for having done so, this allows us to grow from our mistakes.
Our main task in life is to cease all distinctions between the self and the outside world. Once we come to this understanding, there is no us, no other; everything is part of the whole, we are not different than anything else.
Make no one a foe, then harmony and tranquility will be yours. If we rule ourselves with felicity, everyone gains and we can all live in simplicity. Let go of desire for the common good and good will be as common as grass. The world will, in turn, govern itself.
What has been spoiled by man’s fault can be made good through man’s work. We must work toward improving conditions; this accords with the possibilities of the times. Once we know the cause of corruption, we must not recoil from working diligently on them, even if it is dangerous.
